Background of the study
Digital communication platforms foster unique syntactic adaptations that reflect both technological constraints and cultural influences. In Nigeria, WhatsApp and Facebook exemplify distinct communication modes: WhatsApp’s instant messaging style promotes conversational brevity and informal syntax, while Facebook supports extended posts and comments that often adhere to more structured grammatical patterns (Ibrahim, 2023). This study compares syntactic variations in Nigerian digital communication on these two platforms. It explores how factors such as message length, audience formality, and interactivity shape syntactic choices. By analyzing linguistic data from WhatsApp group chats and Facebook comment threads, the research aims to document emerging syntactic innovations, assess their adherence to or deviation from traditional grammar, and explore their potential impact on language evolution (Okafor, 2024). The study contributes to the field of digital linguistics by elucidating how platform-specific features drive syntax variation in online communication.
Statement of the problem
Although syntactic innovation is evident in Nigerian online communication, there is limited comparative research focusing on how platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook differently influence syntax. Most studies treat digital language as homogeneous, thereby overlooking the nuanced syntactic shifts induced by platform-specific constraints and user expectations (Chukwu, 2023). This gap restricts our understanding of digital syntactic evolution and its implications for formal language education and policy development (Ibrahim, 2023).
Objectives of the study
• Analyze syntactic patterns in Nigerian WhatsApp and Facebook communications.
• Identify platform-specific influences on syntax variation.
• Evaluate the impact of these variations on traditional grammar.
Research questions
• What syntactic differences exist between WhatsApp and Facebook communications?
• How do digital affordances affect these syntactic choices?
• What implications do these differences have for conventional language norms?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers a comparative analysis of syntax variation across two widely used social media platforms. Its findings will enhance our understanding of digital language evolution and inform effective language teaching and policy in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses on WhatsApp and Facebook interactions among Nigerian users, excluding other platforms and offline communication.
Definitions of terms
